Graphics Fix for Internet Explorer and Large Fonts.

NOTE:  This fix only applies to Internet Explorer for Windows (not Mac).

Do you find that pictures and other graphics appear a little jagged and look poor when you visit some websites?  Do the edges of the letters in the KaZoonga.NET logo on the top of this page remind you of a saw?  Then read on….

The answer may be a simple update to your computer that will have website graphics looking the way they are supposed to on your computer.

To start, take a close look at the word below:

Do the curves on the letters seem smooth and clean, or do they seem jagged and ‘blocky’?  You may also notice a fine pattern of crosshairs all over the letters and the shadow.  If they look jagged and you’re using Internet Explorer, then try the steps below.

Quick Expert mode:

Download the file and run it to switch IE fonts and icons to “Normal.”  You can switch it back to “Large” using the same utility if you prefer to have it the way it was before.

Step-By-Step (for the rest of us):

  1. Click on the link here to download a nice little utility released from Dell that may solve the issue.  You might want to save the file to your desktop to make it easy to find.

Note:  Downloading and running this file will not mess up your computer.  This utility does not install anything to your computer.  It just makes a very simple update to your computer that can easily be reversed.  The file is not spyware, adware or a virus of any sort.

  1. After you have downloaded the utility, double click on it to run it.  The following box will pop up:

  1. Look at the line in the middle of the window where it says, “Current setting for IE Fonts and Icons.”  If it says, “Large,” then click on the button that says, “Use Normal Fonts and Icons for Internet Explorer.”
  2. Restart Internet Explorer and see if the graphics look better.  If you prefer to have things the way they were before, simply re-run the utility and select, “Use Large Fonts and Icons for Internet Explorer.”

That’s it – you’re all set.  You can delete the utility you downloaded and simply visit the KaZoonga.NET site if you ever need to download it again.

Read on if you want an explanation:

Many computers these days are set to use, “Large fonts.”  That simply means that your computer is making all of the words on the screen 25% larger than they would normally be so that they are easier to read.  Many laptops (especially Dell laptops) have this feature enabled at the factory because of the smaller screens.

When Internet Explorer sees this setting is enabled, it takes it upon itself to make everything larger within the browser window, including pictures and graphics.  While the goal of this to make the page more readable for those that have a tough time reading the screen, the downside is that the graphics that have been scaled up tend to look very poor.

This utility simply makes a registry update that tells Internet Explorer not to scale the pictures and graphics.  IE will still make the text larger even if you have large fonts enabled and selected, “Use Normal Fonts and Icons for Internet Explorer.”
